Store and process sealants and adhesives correctly in winter

With OTTO you can get safely through the winter. In our overview you will find all important information on transport, storage and application of sealants and adhesives at cold temperatures.

Transport in cold temperatures

  • Water-free adhesives and sealants based on silicone, hybrid and polyurethane can be  transported at below-zero temperatures, when only for short time during transport below 0°C.

Storage in cold temperatures

  • OTTO silicone, PU and hybrid sealants and adhesives can be stored without any problems
  • Depending on the product and raw material base: Frost-resistant down to - 40°C (for specific information on storage and temperature stability, please refer to the technical data sheet).

Application at cold temperatures

  • No ice, condensation or other moisture on the adhesive flanks
  • This acts as a separating film and can impair or prevent sealant adhesion

Water-based adhesives and sealants

Lagerung Icon Must not be stored below +5 °C
Verarbeitung Icon Application should also take place at above +5°C

Water-based adhesives and sealants

Lagerung Icon Some dispersion acrylics are resistant to low temperatures down to -10°C for max. 48 h during transport
Verarbeitung Icon When applied, these are also resistant below +5°C

This is what happens with frozen acrylic

Acrylic exposed to cold should no longer be processed. Watch our short video to see exactly how frozen acrylic behaves when it is sprayed out.

Frequently asked questions

Which OTTO products are frost-resistant?

  • When cured, silicone, PU and hybrid sealants and adhesives from OTTO are frost-resistant. Depending on the product and raw material base, the frost resistance is down to -40°C. Specific information on storage and temperature stability can be found in the respective product's technical data sheet.

Which OTTO products are sensitive to frost?

  • OTTO water-based dispersion products as well as water-based OTTOFLEX® products, are not frost-resistant in their unprocessed state and must not be stored or at temperatures below + 5°C while they are curing.
    This applies to the following products: A 205, A 207, A 210, A 215, A 221 Parkett, A 225, A 265 TopFix, FixFritz, A 710, A 270, A 770, OTTOFLEX® Protective coating, -Adhesive primer, -Deep Primer and Primer.

Can sealants and adhesives be stored at temperatures below zero?

  • Yes, water-free adhesives and sealants based on silicone, hybrid and polyurethane can be transported at below-zero temperatures, when only for short time during transport below 0°C.
  • Permanent storage at temperatures below 0°C is not recommended because working with "cold" adhesives and sealants will result in delayed curing. Most products have a firmer working consistency at cold temperatures when they are removed from cold storage and then applied immediately. "Cold" products should be brought to room temperature before application.
  • After complete hardening, the applied products are permanently resistant to low temperatures below 0 °C.

What do I have to pay attention to when working in cold temperatures?

  • When working in cold temperatures,  ensure that no ice, condensation or other moisture is present on the flanks of the bonding agent, as this acts as a separating film and can impair or prevent adhesion of the bonding agent.
  • Water-based dispersion sealants and bonding agents, as well as water-based OTTOFLEX® products, are not frost-resistant in their unprocessed state and must not be stored or at temperatures below + 5 °C while they are curing.
  • For a short time during transport, some dispersion acrylates are resistant to temperatures down to - 10 °C for a maximum of 48 hours. Please pay attention to the information given in the current technical data sheet. Prolonged storage or storage/transport at lower temperatures leads to irreversible frost damage of acrylate sealants and bonding agents (coagulation).
  • After complete hardening, dispersion acrylates are permanently resistant to low temperatures below + 5 °C.

Why should you not grout at temperatures below 5°C?

  • At low temperatures, there is a risk of condensation forming a thin, invisible layer of ice or water on the substrates. This separating layer prevents optimal adhesion of the sealants to the substrate.
  • Single-component hybrid, PU and silicone products require  surrounding air humidity to harden which is virtually non-existent at temperatures below + 5 °C. Water-based sealants such as dispersion acrylates are sensitive to frost when fresh and must not be applied at temperatures below + 5 °C.

What must be considered when shipping products that are sensitive to frost?

  • OTTO water-based dispersion products as well as water-based OTTOFLEX® products, are not frost-resistant in their unprocessed state and must not be stored or applied at temperatures below + 5°C.
  • In order to ensure that these products are not exposed to lower temperatures for a longer period of time (e.g. during the weekend), we only ship   by forwarding agent from Monday to Wednesday when the temperatures drop as low as -5°C.
  • If the temperatures drop even lower than  this mark, no dispatch of these products takes place at all. In exceptional cases, we also ship on Thursdays if delivery on Friday is guaranteed. This regulation does not apply to delivery via parcel services.
  • Cold-protected thermal transports are only possible for full loads with at least 10-14 days' advance notice. However, the freight costs increase at least twofold.

Are the OTTOPUR PU foams suitable for use in winter?

OTTOPUR OP 950 can be used for insulation work in the cold winter months, since it does not require much moisture to cure and hardly depresses. However, please note that   in the winter months  the PU foam itself and not the cavities is to be moistened, as otherwise the water freezes on the cold substrates and the foam does not cure.
