Grouting natural stone perfectly
with OTTOSEAL® S 80

As a professional natural stone processor who does not want to and must not compromise in terms of quality, we show you step by step in the OTTO professional tip how to grout natural stone perfectly with OTTOSEAL® S 80 .

Step 1: Clean and mask off with a tape

Before you can start grouting the natural stone, the substrate must first be prepared and cleaned with the OTTO Cleaner T.

Step 2: Masking  tape

Normaly before filling, the joint should be accurately masked off in the area of the joint edge zone with an adhesive tape suitable for the substrate. Especially in the case of rough, textured or visually sensitive surfaces, this is important in order to avoid the risk of marginal staining by foreign substances.

Step 3: If necessary, insert and prime an OTTO back-up foam rod
If necessary, insert a suitable OTTO back-up foam rod.

To improve the subsequent adhesion of the sealant, it is recommended to use a primer. When choosing the right product, the nature of the stone must always be taken into consideration: OTTO Primer 1102 has been specially developed for sandstone. For other natural stones we recommend OTTO Primer 1216. Refer to the primer chart in the respective technical data sheet of the sealant you have selected to choose the correct one.

Step 4: Applying OTTO natural stone silicone

We reccomend a form-fitting and bubble-free application with a slight excess of sealant to be able to smooth the silicone easily after insertion into the component joint. This should prevent the subsequently applied smoothing and release agents penetrating behind the seal.

Step 5: Smoothing off the joint

The excess silicone is now removed with a smoothing tool moistened with OTTO Marble Silicone Smoothing Agent and then wiped off into a separate waste container. It must not be disposed of in the smoothing agent container.

Step 6: Removing smoothing agent residues

After smoothing, the smoothing agent residues remaining in the marginal are must be removed to avoid marginal contamination due to dried smoothing agent residues on the component surface. After that you can remove the masking tape immediately.

The correct smoothing off technique

When smoothing joints, not only the right smoothing agent is important, but also the correct smoothing technique.

Smoothing matte, matte-sanded sealants and textured surfaces

When smoothing matte, matte-sanded and textured OTTO sealants, the following must be observed: The joints should only be tooled once with a smoothing tool, which was dipped in OTTO smoothing agent. The more often the surface is reworked with a smoothing agent, the more the matte effect is lost and the joint becomes glossier.

Smoothing with OTTO smoothing tools

When smoothing matte sanded shades with the appropriate OTTO smoothing agent, please note that we do not recommend smoothing the joint with a finger, as this presses the sand particles into the sealant and they are no longer visible on the surface. For this application, we recommend our OTTO smoothing tools as the perfect addition
